Garrett outlasts Darvish and the Marlins beat the Padres 9-1 behind season-high 16 hits

  • By BERNIE WILSON - AP Sports Writer

Braxton Garrett outlasted Yu Darvish, Josh Bell had three hits and scored twice and the Miami Marlins beat the sloppy San Diego Padres 9-1 to avoid a sweep. Jesús Sánchez hit a solo homer and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had two hits and drove in two runs as the Marlins had a season-high 16 hits Wednesday and snapped the Padres’ three-game winning streak. The Padres dropped to 13-19 at home. Garrett was impressive for five innings, allowing one run and six hits, with two strikeouts and no walks. His only big mistake was allowing Ha-Seong Kim’s leadoff homer in the third, his seventh.

Argentina women's soccer players understand why teammates quit amid dispute, but wish they'd stayed

  • AP

Players on Argentina’s women’s squad say they understand why four teammates quit amid a dispute with the national soccer federation over pay and conditions but insist they’ll seek improvements by working from within. Goalkeeper Laurina Oliveiros, defenders Julieta Cruz and Eliana Stábile and midfielder Lorena Benítez left the squad Monday ahead of two internatinal friendlies against Costa Rica. They claimed the Argentinian soccer federation disrespected them and told them they wouldn’t be paid expenses for playing in the two games against Costa Rica. The first of those games is on Friday.

Brewers closer Trevor Megill hopes to avoid a stint on injured list after being struck by line drive

  • By RICH ROVITO - Associated Press

Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Megill said Wednesday he hopes to avoid a stint on the injured list, one day after being struck on his pitching arm by a line drive. Mike Tauchman of the Chicago Cubs hit a go-ahead single in a five-run 10th inning that bounced off Megill’s arm in a 6-3 win over the Brewers. The 99.4-mph shot hit Megill on the right forearm, and the pitcher reacted in obvious pain and headed straight to the dugout. Megill called it a bruise, and X-rays show no fracture.

Celebrations in Greece as Olympiakos beats Fiorentina 1-0 for first European title

  • By DEREK GATOPOULOS - Associated Press

Olympiakos has won Greece’s first European club title by beating Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time in the Europa Conference League final. Ayoub El Kaabi dived to nudge in a last-gasp goal in the second period of extra time with fans erupting in celebration after a lengthy wait for a VAR check for offside. The Morocco striker is the competition’s top scorer. He struck in the 116th minute of the match after meeting a cross from Santiago Hezze to decide a game that had looked destined for a penalty shootout following an energetic but largely risk-free encounter at AEK Arena. Olympiakos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar secured a second straight European title after winning the Europa League with Sevilla last season.

Jaire Alexander says he's focusing on team goals while praising Packers' recent staff changes

  • By STEVE MEGARGEE - AP Sports Writer

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander says he’s learned plenty from a turbulent 2023 season that included serving a one-game suspension. The difference is apparent from the two-time Pro Bowl selection’s presence at the Packers’ voluntary organized team activities. Alexander hasn’t lost his sense of bravado. The 2018 first-round pick from Louisville opened his comments on Wednesday by saying that “the best corner in the league has entered the chat.” But he also says he is adopting more of a team-first mentality while emphasizing his appreciation of the Packers organization and his enthusiasm for the team’s recent staff changes.

Oklahoma to chase record 4th straight national title at Women's College World Series

  • By CLIFF BRUNT - AP Sports Writer

Oklahoma is chasing history again. The Sooners head into the Women’s College World Series with the opportunity to win an unprecedented fourth straight national title. They open double-elimination bracket play Thursday against No. 10 seed Duke. The Sooners began the season as the favorites and felt the weight of high expectations. It hasn’t gone as smoothly as some years. Texas won the Big 12 regular-season title, but Oklahoma won the Big 12 tournament. Oklahoma entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed. Texas enters the World Series as the No. 1 overall seed.

'Banged up' Marcus Semien gets a day off after 349 consecutive games for Texas Rangers

  • By STEPHEN HAWKINS - AP Baseball Writer

Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien got a day off for the first time in more than two years. He didn't play in their 6-1 win over Arizona on Wednesday, ending his consecutive games streak at 349 games since May 2022. Manager Bruce Bochy says Semien had been sore since a collision in the outfield with right fielder Adolis García on May 18. The second baseman had played all eight games since then, and was in a 1-for-20 slide the past five games. The Rangers have a day off Thursday before opening a weekend series in Miami.

The 49ers sign receiver Jauan Jennings to an extension through the 2025 season

  • By JOSH DUBOW - AP Pro Football Writer

The San Francisco 49ers signed receiver Jauan Jennings to a contract extension through the 2025 season to get one of their two missing receivers back at practice. The Niners had given Jennings a $4.89 million restricted free agent tender in March before signing him to a two-year deal that is worth up to $15.4 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. ESPN first reported the terms of the new deal. The 49ers still are trying to get a long-term deal done with star receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has been skipping the voluntary portion of the offseason.

  • By NOAH TRISTER - AP Sports Writer

Brian Callahan leaning on lots of Cincy ties as he works to turn around the Titans

  • By TERESA M. WALKER - AP Pro Football Writer

Hiring Brian Callahan as Tennessee’s new head coach meant the Titans would look different this season. Signing cornerback Chidobe Awuzie and wide receiver Tyler Boyd filled key needs for Tennessee with the players also able to spread Callahan’s approach inside the Titans’ locker room. The hiring of a couple of other coaches has brought an undeniable Cincinnati flavor that Callahan and the Titans hope speeds up the turnaround of a franchise that has lost 18 of its past 24 games. Callahan called Boyd and Awuzie huge assets as players not just to the locker room and the Titans but to him as well.

AUTO RACING: Newgarden goes back-to-back at Indy. Bell wins in NASCAR and Leclerc wins in F1

  • By The Associated Press

Rain was one of the winners in racing. A long weather delay at the Indy 500 kept Kyle Larson from completing the rare Indianapolis-Charlotte double, and let Christopher Bell dominate early and win the Coca-Cola 600 when rain wiped out the last 151 laps. Larson had just gotten behind the wheel in North Carolina when a long delay caused the race to be shortened. Josef Newgarden became the first driver to win back-to-back Indy 500s since Helio Castroneves in 2002. And, Charles Leclerc ended three-time cham[pion Max Verstappen's season-long hold on the pole position and used it to win the Formula One race in Monaco.

Mets put struggling closer Edwin Díaz on IL with shoulder impingement, then Alonso exits after HBP

  • By MIKE FITZPATRICK - AP Baseball Writer

Struggling closer Edwin Díaz has been placed on the 15-day injured list by the New York Mets with a right shoulder impingement. The team made the announcement about 15 minutes before its series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In another discouraging development moments later, slugger Pete Alonso exited in the first inning after getting hit on the right hand by a pitch. The Mets said Alonso would undergo imaging. After missing last season because of a knee injury, Díaz is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and five saves. He has blown three straight save chances and four of his past five. And that doesn’t even include a meltdown in Miami on May 18, when the right-hander squandered a four-run lead in the ninth inning.
