This hooding is especially different than my first. It marks a beautiful full circle moment that culminates my completion of the Master of Divinity degree at Columbia Theological Seminary. In the words of one of my dear Homeletics professors, “going to seminary after completing a PhD is liking saying you can swim when you really just know how to ride a bike”! Skill and capacity are necessary, however, Theology is a unique discipline requring your faith to seek understanding. But, I learned to swim in the deep waters of thinking theologically while navigating some tough currents of actual theological praxis. Yet, I am very confident that whether I am in corporate board and conference rooms, university classrooms, community centers, or congregations, I am even more fortified to continue the sacred work of transformation. My intersection just added a few lanes!

So honored to have become acquainted with Marla Frederick during her time in Atlanta. I am over the moon excited for Harvard Divinity School to have such a phenomenal scholar/practitioner and all around wonderful human being as their new Dean! First Black female Dean and from the first and finest sorority too!

Take the time to celebrate!!! Last week, on August 2 I entered a new decade and turned 50 years old. This Gen-X’er is grateful for this space and time in life. I chose to share a snippet of my 5 days of celebrations (yep, a day for each decade) because these are the moments that make me appreciate the importance of continuing to do meaningful work. I appreciate the friends and family who travelled from near and far to make this the sweetest celebratory week ever! On my birthday, I celebrated with a private dinner with a group of women aged 28-73 who epitomize sisterhood and friendship. The next few days followed with a sibling dinner (my bestie and my brother’s and their wives came to Atlanta from across the country), a late night game night, a beautiful garden party, and culminated with Sunday church service and dinner. Cultivate life’s sweet celebrations the same way you cultivate your career!

As Women’s History Month nears its end, I am happy to share that I was blessed with the opportunity to speak for the chapel service at Columbia Theological Seminary last week. CTS is my beloved learning community of faith. This service marked a celebration of Women’s History Month and the relaunch of the Women in Ministry Student Group. My sermon title: Lessons from the Matriarchs and Mavericks of Faith, vol. 1. The link is below and I begin at about the 24 minute mark. https://lnkd.in/gUWngj_G
