Harold Weitzel, utilities superintendent, said yesterday that the board of the public power system made the decision. "The board just felt that as a public benefit for the people that own the system, and we have enough operating capital, we could see our way clear to give people power free for one he said. The average bill for December is about $30, Weitzel said. Defiance fire ruled arson DEFIANCE A fire that heavily damaged an ice cream plant here has been ruled arson, a fire official said Tuesday. Flames from a blow torch that was being used to break into the Nafziger Ice Cream safe apparently touched off the blaze, Fire Chief Robert Marihugh said.
The fire caused $500,000 damage. The blaze also caused the roof to collapse and forced officials to temporarily evacuate 15 houses in the area due to what was feared would be an ammonia leak. Firefighters from seven fire department in Defiance and Fulton counties fought the blaze. The plant recently was renovated and another production line was added. The company makes ice cream mixes and novelties such as ice cream sandwiches.
2 ex-deputies not liable YOUNGSTOWN A Mahoning County Common Pleas Court jury cleared two former deputy sheriffs of liability yesterday in a $3.9 million civil suit filed by 13 tavern patrons, bartenders and the bar owner. The plaintiffs had claimed they were terrorized and threatened with death by brothers Robert and William Kuzniak in an April 16, 1984, incident at the now-defunct Mr. C's Lounge in New Middletown. The plaintiffs each had sought $300,000 in damages from each of the brothers but an eight-member civil jury, which began deliberating Tuesday, ruled the brothers were not liable in the incident. The other defendants in the case included former Sheriff.
James A. Traficant, now a congressman, and current Sheriff Edward P. Nemeth. The brothers, who said they were handling an undercover drug investigation when they went to the tavern, had been cleared earlier of any criminal wrongdoing in the incident.
